Three days, two nights and one of the most scenic routes in Morocco — from the ocher walls of Marrakech over the High Atlas to the golden Erg Chebbi dunes at the edge of the Sahara. This is the classic first-time desert tour: it packs the country's most photogenic landscapes into a long weekend without feeling rushed.

The road climbs to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, where cedar forests give way to lunar mountains and fortified granaries. You stop at the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou — the mud-brick film set of Gladiator and Game of Thrones — before threading through the palm-lined Dades Valley and the sheer walls of Todra Gorge, 300 metres high in places.

The desert part is the heart of the trip. From Merzouga you ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, sleep in a private camp among the sand, and wake for sunrise over the highest dune field in Morocco. Everything is private: your 4x4 or minivan, your guide, your schedule.

Day-by-day itinerary

1. 01

   Day 1 — Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley

   Overnight in a guesthouse in the Dades Valley

   Morning pickup at your riad or hotel, then up into the Atlas. The hairpins of the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) are the scenic highlight, with snow-capped peaks in spring. After lunch at Ait Ben Haddou — where you can walk the ksar and its ramparts — the road runs through Ouarzazate and along the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" to the Dades Valley, where you arrive in time for dinner.

   Day 2 — Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga & Erg Chebbi

   Overnight in a private desert camp at Erg Chebbi

   A short drive along the Dades Valley before Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls narrow to 300 m and a riverside walk takes about 45 minutes. You pass Erfoud, Morocco's fossil capital, and reach Merzouga in the late afternoon. As the light turns orange, you ride a camel for about an hour across the Erg Chebbi to the camp, then share a tagine dinner and Berber drumming around the fire.

3. 03

   Day 3 — Sunrise at Erg Chebbi – Rissani – return to Marrakech

   Drop-off in Marrakech in the evening

   Wake early and climb a dune crest as the sun lifts the desert into gold. After breakfast you ride back to Merzouga and, if the timing allows, stop at Rissani's lively traditional market, founded by the Alawite dynasty. Then the road returns across the Tizi n'Tichka pass with lunch and photo stops, arriving at your riad or hotel in Marrakech in the evening.
